Script: Just a Sketch

INT. DINING AREA – NIGHT

GRANNY (81 years old) stares at the clock.

She raises her arm towards it and begins rotating her arm anti-clockwise. Is she psychic?

TITLE – JUST A SKETCH

INT. DINING AREA – NIGHT

JUSTIN (18) searches through messy drawers.

JUSTIN

Anyone seen my sketchbook?

INT. GRANNY’S ROOM – NIGHT

Granny’s room is filled with photos, stuffed toys and religious iconography.

A portrait of a man sits on top of a coffee table.

Granny stands next to the photo holding a sketchbook. She studies a drawing of a spaceship.

INT. LOUNGE AREA / DINING AREA – LATER

MUM (53), DAD (53) and JERICK (16) watch TV. Justin walks past and notices something funny about the wall.

JUSTIN

Hey, where’s the clock?

The rest of the family turn and shrug at the same time. Justin shrugs as well and walks off.

Down the hallway, Granny peeps from her bedroom and giggles to herself.

INT. LOUNGE AREA – NIGHT

Something is coming out of the corner of a wall. Curly hair, then the glasses and then it is obvious. Granny pops her head out like a spy.

She locks her eyes on an old electric fan – her next target.

INT. LOUNGE AREA – LATER

Dad is sleeping on a couch. In the background, Granny struggles to lift the electric fan.

She almost trips on it so she rests it down and tries to catch her breath.

Granny notices a skateboard nearby.

INT. LOUNGE AREA – LATER

Dad continuous to sleep while Granny easily rolls the fan using the skateboard in the background.

INT. OUTSIDE OF GRANNY’S ROOM – NIGHT

Granny giggles as she wheels the fan into her room. But unbeknownst to her, Justin watches from a distance.

INT. LOUNGE AREA – NIGHT

Granny peeps from behind the wall again. This time she spies an iPad. And there is no one around…

Granny makes a move for it.

Justin is still curiously watching her from behind another wall.

Granny grabs the iPad but Justin is suddenly in front of her.

JUSTIN

That’s mine.

GRANNY

No.

Justin reaches and grabs the iPad.

JUSTIN

Granny, give it.

Justin pulls but it won’t budge.

GRANNY

No.

With surprising strength, Granny pulls the iPad off Justin’s hands. She walks back to her room leaving Justin.

JUSTIN (perplexed)

Umm… Hey.

INT. OUTSIDE GRANNY’S ROOM – NIGHT

Justin knocks on Granny’s bedroom door.

JUSTIN

Gran…

No response.

Justin twists the door handle.

INT. GRANNY’S ROOM – NIGHT

Justin enters. He notices the sketchbook near the doorway. It is still opened to the drawing of the spaceship.

Suddenly, Justin becomes shocked at what is in front of him. Granny has amalgamated random objects to resemble the sketch.

Granny sits on her couch with an umbrella hanging over as a roof. The electric fan is at the back like a booster. The lamp is like an engine, the clock is at the front, the heater is beside her as the door and the iPad is in front of her like a control panel.

Granny presses on her control panel. Her face is focused on the screen. But the screen remains black.

In front of her is the portrait of the man. Justin approaches.

JUSTIN

Granny. Granny smiles at Justin.

GRANNY

Time machine.

JUSTIN

No, it’s not real.

Granny remains positive. Justin changes his language.

JUSTIN

It’s not going to work.

Granny continues to press on the iPad.

GRANNY

Why?

JUSTIN It’s just a sketch.

GRANNY

Of course it’s going to work. It must work.

JUSTIN

It’s just a sketch.

GRANNY

Stand back. I don’t want you to get injured when it starts.

JUSTIN (annoyed)

Granny, it’s just a…

Suddenly, the iPad lights up. The lamp begins to flash and the fan at the back begins to spin.

Justin stands back. Granny smiles at Justin.

GRANNY

I’m going to see your grandpa again.

The clock at the front begins to wind back. Poof!
Granny and the time machine disappear.

JUSTIN (perplexed)

Umm… Hey.

FADE OUT.
