ART-traction: The Art of Craft

I would like to use this week’s post to draw attention to the rather divine Craft Victoria.

As far as gallery names go, there are more exciting alternatives, but don’t let that be a deterrent!

Located at the top of Flinders Lane, the gallery is a hidden oasis for every self-respecting fan of design.

Upon entering number 31, it’s a short flight of stairs down to the underground shop and gallery.

The shop itself is a marvel. Independent design champions the colourful selection of home-wares, jewellery and stationary.

It’s a guaranteed location for sourcing that gift for your equally discerning friend or family member.

Past the delights of the shop is a gallery space of equal aesthetic indulgence.

Three artists currently occupy the space – Eddy Carroll presents a series of hand-stitched bead and feather sculptures entitled Glimmer of Wild Patience, and Toby Pola uses life-size balsa

Lucus Grogan completes the trio with a truly mouth-dropping piece. Made up of 4000 hand-embroided roses, Grogan uses the form of a bed quilt to discuss the shifting definition of marriage.

Craft does accept exhibition submissions and it is well worth exploring here.

Lucus Grogan has been an artist of keen interest for some time now. Based in Melbourne, his works are consistently fabulous.

highly reminiscent of porcelain china, Grogan’s works are not only visual delightful but wonderfully humorous.

Grogran’s occupancy of Hosier Lane in 2011, entitled You Look Terrific Babe, was enough to launch an on-going artist crush.

Craft Victoria is secret a little too well-hidden, make sure to pop by for the most satisfying fix of all things creative, well formed and beautifully produced.

All three artists are on exhibition until the June 15.

Craft Victoria is located at 31 Flinders Lane, Melbourne.
