WARNING: This recap contains spoilers for episode 2 of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under
This might be one of the most shocking episodes in Drag Race history – and I loved it. After five years of watching Drag Race it can become a little bit stale and easy to predict (I still love it of course, but sometimes it feels like nothing is really shocking anymore). But launching into snatch game in the second episode of the season was so overwhelming and incredible! Snatch game is easily the clearest way to weed out the top-tier queens from the bottoms; but this snatch game didn’t do that at all!
There has been a lot of mixed opinions about how good this snatch game was overall. Personally, I think it was good. Etcetera Etcetera’s Lindy Chamberlin was genius and the funniest performance of the night. There was a lot of controversy surrounding the choice, but as a nation we constantly mock Lindy anyway so I can’t see the harm. Anita Wig’lit’s Queen was incredible however I think it’s a safe choice! We’ve heard these jokes before and know them well – although that peanut butter and corgi joke literally stopped me in my tracks.
It is clear (to me at least) that the worst performance of the night was Art Simone. No matter how good her runway look was, that performance was terrible. There was no resemblance to Bindi Irwin and no jokes – the only two things that are asked from you in snatch game. On top of that, Art easily lost the lip sync. It was terrible and yes, I do believe she deserved to go home. I do think she will be brought back into the season as she is such a fan favourite, but I love the drama of her being sent home second. Without Art Simone going home this early we wouldn’t have had that iconic line – “that means nothing”.
An incredible episode that genuinely made me excited to continue watching this season and ultimately, the real loser was Kylie Minogue who didn’t get to see her song used for a lip sync battle!
The next episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under drops 4pm on Saturday 15 May.
